You need
- 2.98 yd³crusher run, 4.5 tons
- 0.37 yd³sand, 0.5 tons
- You need 567 pavers of 4 × 8 in for 120 sq ft. That has 5% extra for cuts.
- Under them, get 2.98 cubic yards (4.5 tons) of crusher run. Pack it down in thin layers. Then get 0.37 cubic yards (0.5 tons) of concrete sand for a 1 in bed.
- Dig 9.38 in deep: 2.38 in of paver, 1 in of sand and 6 in of stone. Dig 6 in past every edge, too.
- Stone and sand cost about $107 to $228. Delivery is extra. Type your paver price to add the pavers.
Text this to a stone yard
Hi! For a paver patio I need about 4.5 tons of 3/4 in crusher run and 0.5 tons of concrete sand, delivered. What would it cost, with delivery?
How deep to make the base
Under pavers goes packed crushed stone, then 1 inch2.5 cm of coarse sand. Pack the stone in layers 2 to 3 in5 to 8 cm thick.
- Patios6 to 8 in15 to 20 cm
- Walkways6 to 8 in15 to 20 cm
- Pool decks6 to 12 in15 to 30 cm

Unilock Basic Tech Guide, January 2024, "Typical paver base thickness". Clay soil needs a deeper base. Sandy soil needs less.

No paver maker we found gives a number for extra. Paver calculators use about 5% for straight rows and 10% for herringbone, so we do too. Add more for curves.
How the math works
- Area. Length times width. For a circle, half the width times itself, times 3.1416. One meter is 3.28084 feet.
- Pavers. Area times the extra for cuts, divided by the size of one paver, rounded up. We use the paver's face size, so joints make the real count a bit smaller.
- Gravel base. Area (plus 6 in past every edge, if on) times the base depth. Crusher run packs down to 0.89 of its loose size (Caterpillar), so you buy 1.124 times as much. Weight: 1.5 tons a cubic yard (our estimate, 1.4 to 1.6). This is the same math as our gravel calculator.
- Sand. Area times 1 inch. Damp sand weighs 2,850 lb a cubic yard (Caterpillar).
- Dig depth. Paver thickness, plus 1 in of sand, plus the base.
- Price. Stone: the crusher run price that yards post, moved to your state, as on the gravel page. Sand: what yards post for concrete sand, $26 to $52 a ton. Pavers: too few dealers post a price, so type yours. Delivery, edging, fabric and tools are not in it.
Questions
How many pavers do I need?
Divide the patio area by the size of one paver, then add extra for cuts. For 100 sq ft of 4 × 8 in pavers, that is 450 pavers, or 473 with 5% extra.
How much gravel do I need for a paver base?
For a patio, 6 to 8 inches of packed crusher run, says Unilock. For 100 sq ft at 6 in, that is about 2.08 cubic yards, since packing it takes 12% more.
How much sand goes under pavers?
A 1 inch layer of coarse sand, says Unilock. For 100 sq ft, that is 8.3 cu ft, or 0.31 cubic yards.
How deep do I dig for pavers?
Add the paver, the sand and the base. A 2 3/8 in paver, 1 in of sand and 6 in of base is 9 3/8 inches. Dig at least 6 in past the edges, says Belgard.
How much does a paver patio cost?
If you do it yourself, you pay for pavers, gravel and sand. For a 12 × 10 ft patio on 6 in of base, the stone and sand cost about $107 to $228, before delivery. Paver prices vary a lot by style, and too few dealers post them. Ask a dealer, and type the price into the calculator.
How many extra pavers should I buy?
About 5% for straight rows and 10% for herringbone. No paver maker gives a set number. Keep a few spares to fix a cracked paver later.
